3 Tips to Help Kids Adjust to SchoolOn August 3, 2017 by Sharon Taberski
Your child has just started kindergarten and realizes it is not the same as day care or even preschool. As a result, Mondays start with tears or even a tummy ache in an attempt to stay home. However, children often result in a tummy ache due to their anxiety. With a little bit of help, you can guide your child in adjusting to school.
Here are 3 tips to help kids adjust to school.
Kids need to feel accepted by an adult that they think will keep them sake. This is important for younger children, especially those who are used to spending their days with their parents. You can start by transferring their focus on attachment to their teacher. If your child still doesn’t feel confident about school, discuss your concerns with your teacher and they will pay extra attention that might help. Many teachers take on the initiative of assigning special jobs to help them feel confident in their role at the school.
As for other children, encourage your child to make friends with at least one other student. Consider inviting the child over to play. If your child isn’t comfortable in asking, you can always invite the mom and her child for a treat after school.
Provide Some Sort of Hold throughout the Day
The biggest trouble kids have is saying goodbye to their parents. You can develop a ritual of a hug and praise or put a picture of your family in their backpack. Many students also opt to bring a token in their pocket or a lunch note in their back.
Anxiety in young children is often caused by worries that they think their parents might find strange or silly. Provide reassurance to your child and let them know that they will be safe, and if something happens, the school can always contact you. You can try to help your child laugh out their anxieties by spending time in the morning playing a game or talking about something they enjoy. Just stay away from tickling as this may build up stress hormones and spark a mood swing instantly.
