3 Ways to Get Your Kids to ExerciseOn February 12, 2018 by Sharon Taberski
With the increasing popularity of iPads, iPhones, and other gadgets to distract kids, more and more children are becoming less physically active. With obesity becoming more prevalent among elementary school age children, here are some tips to get your kids active and outdoors….
1. Involve them in chore like walking the dog
We know your children love Fido – but get them to take an active role in caring for the dog by encouraging them to take him for a walk. If they aren’t old enough to walk the dog on their own, they can join you as you take him outside. This strengthens the bond between your child and the dog and provides good outdoor exercise for the entire family.
2. Join them in fun runs and kids races
Most kids love to run for the sheer joy of it. Encourage that by signing them up for kids races and local fun runs. Most 5k races have a kids race either before or after the 5k. Sign your kids up – they’ll often get a medal and t-shirt for running. Running is a great form of exercise. All you really need for your child is a good pair of running shoes.
3. Schedule It
It’s no secret that children are happier and more social when their life is well scheduled. Kids want to know what is coming up next, even if they don’t outwardly say so. For exercise and other outdoor activities, make it a habit to schedule it the same time every week. This is one of the reasons youth soccer leagues and other programs are nice activities for kids. You’ll find your children will be more receptive to exercising if they come to expect it every week.
